About Star Trek The Motion Picture 12 5
Paramount initially attempted to treat the Star Trek movie as a separate license to the Star Trek TV series and Mego had to fight long and hard that their contract for merchandising rights over the entire Star Trek franchise to be honoured.
What's interesting
The Movie was successful at the box office but it was more cerebral adult film close to creator Gene Roddenberry's original vision for Star Trek. However it was action and character interplay between Kirk, Spock and McCoy was the formula that many fans actually enjoyed; leaving out this dynamic translated as poor sales for Mego, and new youthful characters Decker and Ilia failed to make an impact on the screen and the toy depts.
