Cerebus The Aardvark was originally intended as a parody of Marvel's Howard the Duck and Conan. The comic lasted 300 issues over a 27 year long period and although black and white and an acquired taste Dave Sim's creation is vehemently defended by its fan base

What's interesting

Up until this point Marvel and DC had both dominated the comic book market, it would take a decade before independents such as Image and Dark Horse Comics would begin to offer some alternatives and competition in the industry.
