Although Moonraker was successful it's upping the ante of it's fantasy trajectory could not be sustained . This resulted in For Yours Eyes Only becoming what is known today as a soft reboot i.e. a real conscious effort to bring the series more back to basics.

What's interesting

This reboot resulted in a the story where the fate of the world was not at risk but a plot more in line with Fleming's original novels, where Bond relied more on his wits than outlandish gadgets to survive. This rationale is no where more symbolically represented than with the scene where Bond's Lotus blows itself up and forces 007 to rely on Melina's more humble Citroën 2CV.
